About Billy Molls

The History

Blily's Grandpa trapping
Billy Molls was born in 1977 and raised on a Wisconsin dairy farm. Trapping with his father and grandfather sparked a fascination of nature and a craving for adventure.

One day while skinning a beaver pelt, Billy’s grandpa said to him, “If you want adventure Alaska’s the place you need to go; there’s places man’s never been, and animals that’ve never seen a human.”

From that moment, Billy knew he needed to experience the Alaskan wilderness for himself. His goal was to become an Alaska hunting guide.

A Guiding Career Begins

After graduating high school in 1996, Billy worked 80+ hours a week at a cheese factory to buy a truck, gear, and pay tuition to attend a guide school in Montana.

His first job in the hunting industry was as a packer/wrangler in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho. Billy loved the experience, but Alaska was still calling.

The following winter he emailed, called, and sent hand-written letters to every Alaska hunting outfitter he could find. He told his future boss, “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to become an Alaska hunting guide. Just give me a chance. If I’m not worth it, you don’t have to pay me.”

Billy Molls Packing Caribou in the Alaska Wilderness
Billy’s first job in Alaska was as a packer on Kodiak Island for brown bear. He went on to guide salmon fishermen that summer on the Mulchatna River, and later went on to pack for moose, caribou, and brown bear on the Nushagak River that fall.

Nearly 30 years later—Billy has guided hundreds of clients across some of the most remote regions of Alaska for brown bear, grizzly bear, moose, Dall sheep, caribou, and wolf. Since the beginning, Billy has filmed his Alaskan adventures to share with his grandfather back in Wisconsin.

Modern Day Mountain Man Begins

In 2005 Billy started a television show titled, “Modern Day Mountain Man”. After two years, the pressures of television turned something he loved into a job. Billy quit TV and put his Alaskan hunting adventures solely onto DVD.

Though his grandpa has since passed, to this day Billy maintains, “I produce my films as though I was sharing them with my grandpa. My goal is to show the viewer who’s never hunted in Alaska what it’s truly like, and bring back the memories and emotions of those who have hunted there.”

The Love Of Billy’s Life
