Trust The Guide
Trust The Guide is a Christian outreach ministry Billy founded in 2020. Trust The Guide includes a films series in which he shares his Christian faith journey through his hunting adventures. Billy speaks nationally and internationally at Christian outreach events, Bible and discipleship conferences, and wild game dinners.
Billy grew up attending Sunday school, singing the songs, and going to church. At the age of 14 he was confirmed, took communion, and believed in a God, but he couldn’t wrap his head around who Jesus was. Billy went on to live life on his terms, all the while knowing he was missing something.
During his time guiding big game hunters in Alaska, Billy was exposed to a lot of people from various walks of life and all corners of the globe. Through the years he encountered Christian men and women who stood out. He saw a light in them that others didn’t seem to have. Billy credits a couple bush pilots and fellow guides who led him to know the Lord. “They didn’t preach to me. They rarely even shared a verse of scripture. What drew me to them was how they lived their lives day-in and day-out, season after season. It was obvious they had something I didn’t.”

August 17, 2011 was the day Billy surrendered his life to Jesus Christ. He was in Alaska’s Brooks Range mountains guiding sheep hunters when his wife, Stacia, went into labor. His client had tagged out and gone home early. Billy was 3,000 miles away from his wife and family. His only company was 35 Dall sheep ewes and lambs on a mountainside near camp, and a sow grizzly and her two cubs on the other side of the valley. The young father found himself praying as he paced up and down a lonely gravel bar beside his tent. The more he paced and the more he prayed, the more helpless, hopeless, and convicted he felt. Billy had been in regular communication with his sister-in-law, who was with Stacia as she was in labor. Two hours went by with no one answering Billy’s satellite telephone calls. He began to fear something must’ve gone wrong.
“The more I prayed for my wife and unborn child, the more anxious I became. Guilt and shame of my past consumed me. Never in my life had I ever felt God was actually listening to me, but in that moment, I knew he was watching and he heard me, but I also knew my prayers were powerless. I told myself, ‘Whatever you’ve got to say, say it.’ So I got down on my knees and I didn’t even think… the words just seemed to fall out. ‘God, please forgive me for how I’ve lived my life… You’ve given me a life I don’t deserve. I know I have no right to ask you for anything, but I beg you, please, strike me dead right here and now for what I’ve done. I just ask for you to keep my wife and child safe and healthy.’”
“Tears were pouring out as I said, Amen. I stood and looked up to the mountain with the lambs and ewes, and John 3:16 flooded to mind: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.’ An all-consuming peace took over me, and in that moment the Gospel of Jesus Christ became crystal clear to me; every animal in nature would fight to the death, gladly giving up its life in exchange for the life of its offspring—that’s how nature perpetuates. I recognized there was no greater way for God to prove His love for mankind than to send his Son to die for the forgiveness of our sins. And in that instant I knew it was only by Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection, and my surrender to Him that could ever pay the debt for my sin. That instant I was 100% certain that I was forever forgiven of my sins… There was no longer any doubt the Gospel of Jesus Christ was real. I repented, surrendered… and BOOM!!! He was there, and I was consumed with peace (Ephesians 4:7). I didn’t know if my wife or unborn child were dead, but I knew everything was and is in God’s hands, and it didn’t matter if my wife and unborn child were dead or alive. I realized I was under the power of the Holy Spirit.”

“As I looked back at the sow grizzly and her cubs and scanned the stunning mountains before me, it was like the world went from black and white to full color: I knew my life couldn’t possibly ever be the same. God did in fact “strike me dead”. I was born again. (John3:3) I immediately asked God, Now what?, and what I heard in response wasn’t audible, it was still and small, but His words were certain: ‘Share this.’”
From that day Billy knew God had a calling on his life to share the Gospel. He wrestled with God about going to seminary to become a pastor, until finally years later, while guiding a Dall sheep hunt in Alaska, God’s calling on his life was cemented, “I’ve called you to the wild, not just to hunt but to be my witness to hunters.”
